Companies Must Ensure Safety of Tyres in Company Cars

A recently conducted study by TyreSafe has revealed that many drivers who are driving company cars are not following safety standards, thereby increasing the risk of road accidents. One-fourth of the company car drivers have admitted that they have not verified the thickness of tyre tread even once, and more than forty percent of the drivers have not verified the same in past six months.

The duty of ensuring tyre safety on company cars lies with the company as well as employees. TyreSafe has cautioned companies that if they do not undertake required checks, then penalties such as fines can be imposed on them.

The present legal mandate in the UK is that the tread of a tyre should be at least 1.6 mm in the central three-fourths and in the border. TyreSafe has introduced its ‘lifesaver in your pocket’ program in order to make the process of verifying tyre tread thickness less complicated.

This initiative gives a simple method to verify tread thickness, in which a 20p coin has to be inserted in the principal grooves of the tyre. A qualified expert should be called in if the outside edge of the coin can be seen through the grooves after it is inserted.

The Chairman of TyreSafe Stuart Jackson said that companies should ensure that drivers are aware of their obligations regarding tread check of tyres. Jackson added that it is crucial for company drivers to give importance to their tyres as they travel around 20,000 miles in a year, which is twice the distance covered by people driving privately.

TyreSafe’s check gives an easy method of verifying whether the tyres are secure and satisfy legal requirements. Workplace injuries and expenditure of the UK companies can be drastically lowered by conducting this check every month.
