“I Should Be Doing …. But…”

December 29th, 2008

“I Should Be Doing …. But…”

What a perfect fall Saturday morning, clear sunny blue sky, with a crisp breeze blowing. It’s just the one I’ve been waiting for to begin that yearly regimen, Fall Clean Up. Throwing on some old work clothes, grabbing a mug of steaming coffee and picking up the list of jobs off the kitchen table, I head outside.

First order of business is to sit on the back step, drink some coffee - helps to get the eyes fully opened - and begin going over the list. It’s not a particularly long list, however, there is the possibility of finishing this mug of wake-up juice, which will then require a trip back to the kitchen for another.

This is a yearly ritual, so I’ve got the routine down pat. The process was started several weeks-ago, by first leaving a pad of paper on the counter - where it was always visible - this way when someone - usually me - thought of a job it could be jotted down. This is going to save time and guarantee everything will get done. Well, it certainly sounds like a good idea.

All right, now that the second mug - yes, it did happen - is almost finished, it’s time to take the annual walk. This means walking around the house and yard - with the list of course - and double-checking that everything is posted.

Oh, are you wondering what’s on this sacred list? Nothing terribly exciting just the following: 1.Clean the outside of windows 2.Gather up all lawn furniture - to be stored in basement 3.Collect garden figures - also to be stored in basement 4.Begin cleaning fallen leaves from garden beds 5.Cut back plants in beds - after leaves have been cleaned out

Getting back to where we left off, things have not progressed very far. I’m slightly off schedule because of a sit down to enjoy “Mother Natures” beautiful display of color. Ok, back to… Oh, wait the mug is empty, just let me get another refill and I’ll be back.

Well, its late afternoon and I’m really behind due to a couple of important phone calls. I’ve been sitting at my desk watching the flurry of activity outside my window. The “Feathered Friends Backyard Diner” is open for business and quite busy. There are also a couple of adorable little squirrels that have been chasing each other up and down a tree.

I should be doing jobs on that list, but it’s getting late, the sun is moving away and the temperature is stating to go down. Maybe I’ll make another pot of coffee, fill up that mug once more and continue to watch the entertainment outside the window. After all, there’s always next Saturday. This article is shareware. Fulfill a Wedding Tradition with Estate Bridal Jewelry

December 28th, 2008

We all know the old verse “Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue.” But it’s way more than a verse, its something many brides follow to the rule. So why not fulfill a wedding tradition with estate bridal jewelry?

Future brides from every corner of the globe try very hard to follow this little verse. Their wedding gowns, accessories and jewelry must all play into this little verse. What’s really great is that estate bridal jewelry can fill the requirements very easy! Let’s look at each portion of the vers.

Something old
could be a piece of bridal jewelry that is a family heirloom. It may come from the brides side of the family or the grooms side. It may have been owned by a mother, a grandmother, or even just a traditional piece that is worn by all brides in the family. And if there is no family heirloom bridal jewelry not to worry, you are certainly not alone. That’s where estate jewelry can fill the gap. Find a piece of estate jewelry you love and adore, buy it, wear it. You’ll keep the tradition of something old alive and well!

Something new
Not much explaining to do here. New is a pretty easy bill to fill. There are thousands of online stores and brick and mortar stores offering a great mix of modern stylish jewelry that is perfect as bridal jewelry. But wait! Estate jewelry can help here too. Not all estate jewelry is very old. Estate simply means previously owned and that means by looking at estate jewelry that dates within the last year you can often find that perfect piece that may never have been worn and meets the something new requirement. The added bonus is you won’t look like every other bride because your bridal jewelry will have a unique look all of its own

Something borrowed
May require the most thought. After all most brides want their look to be theirs complete with their own choices in bridal jewelry. Remember borrowing that special piece from a friend or family member can add the finishing touches to your look and it can save you thousands of dollars. Gemstones aren’t cheap! And if you have no one to borrow from never fear there are many retailers that rent out beautiful estate jewelry for weddings. This fulfills your need for something borrowed and you get the added effect of something beautiful and unique.

Something blue
Is your final quest and can be quite an easy task. The most important is to remember there are thousands of shades of blue and you’ll want to choose one that matches your attire. You can choose from sapphires, aqua marines, or even blue pearls to name a few. Your blue can be bold and noticeable or it can be just a hint of blue. Once again estate jewelry comes through. You can find a beautiful piece of jewelry that is unique and affordable and of the highest quality by shopping for estate jewelry.

On your wedding day you are the attraction and you’ll want to look your very best for this important occasion. Choosing estate bridal jewelry will do it’s part to make you look gorgeous and it will have you radiant as you waltz down the aisle!

Three Reasons to Invest in Online Video: Why Streaming Video Must Be Included in your Marketing Plan

December 27th, 2008

Userplane’s Michael Jones explains why online video must be included in your marketing mix.

Thanks to online video ads, guys with bad hygiene and pathetic social skills can try wooing VH1 VJ Rachel Perry– and they even get a well-mannered response. Ah, the wonders of the internet.

The ad campaign was an innovative partnership between laddie-mag Maxim and Pontiac to hype the carmaker’s Solstice Roadster. Users logged onto the magazine’s website and submitted pick-up lines to an image of Perry, actually an incarnation of the beautiful celebrity compiled from hundreds of pre-recorded videos. People with the best lines registered to win a car. Depending on the attempt, the program culled Perry’s retort in real time from hundreds of pre-recorded responses. The site was flooded with users. According to Advertising Age, 16,000 people registered in its first three weeks.

The titillating Pontiac campaign was the successor to Burger King’s Subservient Chicken, an online craze of its own. The two demonstrate the unique potential for online video ads. They lock millions of users to the sites, create a viral response by allowing fans to email the links to friends, and generate pop culture buzz. And of course, the online video ads paid off in higher chicken sandwich sales and registrations.

We shouldn’t be surprised online video ads are becoming so popular. The streaming ads are a natural outgrowth of technological advances, evolving consumer habits and the perennial desire to gain traction with users. They are a much-needed advance in the maturation of the internet and will help ensure its future profitability. Fortunately, companies are realizing this. The online research aggregator eMarketer projects streaming video spending will nearly triple to $640 million in the next two years, and grow to $1.5 billion by 2010.

Three key factors have caused the rise of online video ads, and will guarantee the medium soars in 2006. 1.) A tech-savvy culture If the internet were a child, we could say it’s leaving the awkward ugly stage and beginning to blossom. Let’s face it, only a small number of consumers jumped on board with the latest technologies when they over-promised on the results or didn’t work out the bugs. At first, technology was holding back advances, which held back the profits. I was like a parent, cringing and wincing at those banners and pop-ups. It was like seeing my youngster lurching through puberty. Hang in there little buddy, you’re gonna make it! Now, technology is catching up with expectations, which entices a broader range of consumers and gives marketers a piece of the action. I’m beaming.

The rapid adoption of broadband internet access is the primary driver of online video ads. And it’s only going to get better. The U.S. market hurdled a barrier to internet advertising this year when more than half of online households were using high-speed connections. A study by eMarketer estimates the number will continue to grow, from 42.3 million households in 2005 to 69.4 million in 2008.

With all those high-speed connections out there, comScore Networks found consumers putting them to good use. More than 94 million people in the United States viewed a streaming video online in June of last year, according to comScore. The company recently released the first comprehensive assessment of the online streaming marketplace and, surprisingly, discovered that technology isn’t just for youngsters anymore. Consumers between ages 35 and 54 accounted for more than 45 percent of online video ads watched in August 2005. It is 20 percent more likely that these mature adults will watch an online video than the typical internet user, the study found, and people between the ages of 25 and 34 are 12 percent more likely to watch a streaming video. These are hot marketing targets, and they love their streaming media.

“Contrary to public perception, it’s not just ‘college kids’ or ‘bleeding edge’ internet users who are streaming videos,” said Erin Hunter, senior vice president of comScore Networks media and entertainment solutions. Publishers are using innovations like high-quality video product clips, music videos, movie trailers — even news broadcasts — to engage consumers, Hunter said. “This creates a fantastic opportunity for advertisers to capitalize on what is now a mainstream audience,” she added.

2.) An evolving business mindset The video ad pioneers have mainstream companies hot on their heels, jumping on the online video bandwagon. Todd Herman of MSN told Clickz.com that 23 of the top 50 brands have advertised on the site since its launch in August 2004. They include Pfizer, Procter & Gamble, General Motors and Johnson & Johnson.

Hunter, of comScore, says advertisers are “waking up” to the potential of online video ads. “People want more than a two-dimensional experience online, and this powerful medium now reaches everyone with engaging and interesting content,” Hunter said.

The internet makes users part of the media experience. They aren’t just viewers, as they are on television. They’re participants. They’re members of the online community. Advertisers are taking advantage of this increased engagement and loyalty. On New Year’s Eve, MSN aired 30-second video ads from the entertainment and automotive industry throughout its live web cast from Times Square. The coverage allowed internet viewers to become part of the show– sending emails that were included in the web cast.

Companies are also mainstreaming online video ads because they use quantitative data to connect consumers to products and services. This is the new “golden metric” to determine ROI, according to Diane Mermigas, contributing editor to The Hollywood Reporter. “It is impossible to counter the logic that paying 28 cents for a click on Google by a targeted consumer who might engage in an electronic transaction is not preferred to paying 10 cents per reader for a national magazine print ad that might not be seen,” Mermigas writes.

Mermigas says traditional media outlets can cash in on the online action by moving consumers and advertisers to websites. In the future, look for more joint marketing sales between internet video advertising and traditional media outlets. Companies will integrate campaigns, combining online videos with TV spots run on cable networks. This naturally extends the campaign because video production costs were paid when the content was prepared for traditional media.

3.) Interactive, engaging and informative Finding your ads’ target audience is only a start, you have to lock them in to be effective, get them to engage. TV, radio and print have skinned this cat every which way for decades, but they’re still handicapped. They’re dealing with passive mediums and can’t snoop while the consumer interacts with the pitch. The truth is, they don’t know who’s paying attention or for how long! Meanwhile, customers who check out the new online video ads by Ross-Simons not only get a behind-the-scenes peek at the styles of jewelry merchant, their interaction with the ad teaches marketers what works.

Ross-Simons just launched its streaming ads on its website. They star soap opera actress Lauren Koslow of NBC’s “Days of Our Lives,” and allow consumers to click on highlighted items to learn more or order the product. The videos engage customers and allow them to take action at the moment of interaction. It’s more than an advertisement– it’s a prelude to a transaction.

Shot on digital video, there is little comparison between online advertisements and their passive cousins. Programmers can blend interactive concepts with the campaigns, like hidden “Easter eggs,” flash, 3-D and high-resolution images. Many online ads include viral elements like emailing the ad to friends or allowing users to become part of the online community by posting comments on the site.

David Hallerman, senior analyst at eMarketer, said, “More than any other advertising format, internet video has the potential to blend hot marketing elements together– branded entertainment, paid search, viral marketing, consumer generated media, behavioral targeting, website brand marketing and online gaming.”

And every time a user emails an ad, clicks on an Easter egg or conducts a search, we’re learning more about our target audience. We’ll take that information and improve, giving consumers what they really want next time, and the time after that, and the time after that. The best part is that this is only the beginning.

Diamond Alternative Engagement Rings -Brilliance At An Affordable Price

December 27th, 2008

For diamond alternative engagement rings, moissanite is an excellent choice. You get a dazzling brilliance, which draws attention to your ring at a much more affordable price that a real diamond. When you choose platinum as the metal of the ring, you have exquisite diamond alternative engagement rings that any woman would be thrilled to wear.

Platinum moissanite engagement rings are very popular. Although platinum is more expensive than gold or silver in rings, it has a durability that the other metals do not have. This choice in diamond alternative engagement rings provides you with choices in rings that you can wear on all occasions. If you work in an environment that does not lend itself to wearing gold or silver because it might get scratched or tarnished, then platinum is the perfect alternative.

Rather than use cubic Zirconia in engagement rings, many couples are looking at moissanite as the stone of choice in diamond alternative engagement rings. This is because moissanite is a lab-created imitation diamond. It naturally occurs in nature and its scientific name is silicon carbide, but it occurs in very small quantities. It is only slightly less than the diamond on the Mohs scale of hardness, being 9.4 as compared to the diamond at 10.

For the ultimate diamond alternative engagement rings, look at what the platinum moissanite engagement rings have to offer. The hardness and durability of the moissanite stone, combined with the durability of platinum offers an impressive combination. The silver color of the platinum gives the appearance of white gold and goes well with any attire. With these rings, you also save money that you will need later on to plan your wedding or to buy a new home.

Having a moissanite engagement ring also means that you can have a much larger stone in your ring than if you opted for the traditional diamond. In diamond alternative engagement rings, moissanite also looks divine when you have several stones in a chanel setting. Moissanite actually outperforms diamonds when it comes to brilliance, although it does not have the same clarity.

Jewellers have to struggle to tell the difference between diamonds and moissanite. They need to have a high-powered microscope in order to tell the difference. This makes it a perfect choice for diamond alternative engagement rings. If you choose this stone for the engagement ring, you do need to tell your fianc© that it is a diamond alternative engagement ring, just in case she decides to take it to a jeweller to have it appraised.

For a website totally devoted to Moissanite rings visit Peter’s Website The Magic of Moissanite, and find out about Moissanite Bracelets as well as Loose Moissanite Stones and more, including Mens Moissanite Rings, Moissanite Earrings, Moissanite Bridal Rings and Moissanite Engagement Rings

Hippo Rage - a humorous look at stress and anger today

December 26th, 2008

(text of a mini-keynote speech by David Leonhardt, The Happy Guy, which brought down the house in Gatineau, Quebec, April 21, 2002)

Has anybody here ever been stuck in traffic for a frustratingly long time? Put up your hand if you have.

Oooh! Don’t you just hate that? And some people don’t mind showing us how much they hate it. We call it road rage.

Has anybody ever waited in a ticket lineup or a checkout lineup for a frustratingly long time? Let me see those hands.

Believe it or not, some people don’t like that either. We call it lineup rage.

Has anybody ever been stuck waiting in a doctor’s office for a frustratingly long time? Let me see those hands.

And then you see somebody suddenly jump up and tear his hair out and scream, “Let me out. I’ve been here three hours. Three days. Three months!” Well, I really should appologize. I didn’t mean to scare your kids. I was just demonstrating waiting room rage.

Let me tell you a story about the Lwungwa River Valley - that’s in Africa, you know. The dry season there gets very dry. My throat is getting dry just thinking about it. The Lwangwa River stops rushing. It slows to a trickle. Finally, it stops flowing. And all that are left are pools of water, here and there.

One by one, the animals head to higher ground. To forest cover. To other water holes. Anywhere they can find food or drink. Just like we will all do late. Did I say all the animals? Not all. Not the hippos.

The hippos stay in their river at it slows to a stream. They stay in the stream as it turns into pools. They stay in the pools as they shrink into puddles. As the puddles shrink, the hippos get more crowded. As the hippos get more crowded, they get surly. Cranky. Grumpy. They gnash their teeth. They poke at each other. They pick fights. It’s river rage!

Has anyone ever come face to face with a raging hippopotamus? Don’t be shy. Go ahead, put up your hands. Sure, when we’re young - I’m sure you all remember this as I do - we’re taught that they’re slow, cute, and cuddly. They might even be pink or purple and do those dances in tutus like in Fabntasia. But in the real world they have teeth the size of your head. They can run faster than anyone in this room. And they weight upwards of 5,000 pounds. I mean, they are BIG! If you’re ever at a cocktail party and a hippopotamus starts, you know, flirting with you, whatever you do, do not let him sit on your lap.

Rage is all the rage these days. Road rage. Lineup rage. Waiting-room rage. Even river rage. You may also have heard of parking lot rage, elevator rage and airplane rage. What gives? Is the world getting angrier or just more crowded?

Both. It’s a fact that as our space and time grow increasingly crowded, our stress levels rise.

When it comes to space, we are cramming more people into more crowded cities, elevators, airplanes, stores. Our patience diminishes. Our good will diminishes. Our tolerance diminishes. Has anyone noticed they place the chairs at conferences - you noticed! — so close together that even skinny people get to know each other well. My theory is that the hotels are trying to develop their own niche rage market: conference seating rage.

Let’s look at our schedules. What are we trying to do? We’re trying to see how many items we can squeeze onto our “to do” list, and how many activities we can cram into a day. And the stress, where does it go? Right up there, exactly.

I want to share this one little thought with you. We are in the process of moving, so we actually have two homes. Stress that builds in my stacked concrete box apartment they call a condo, I can’t get rid of. It sticks. I can’t shake it off. It won’t go. It sticks. When I’m at my farm house just a few miles south of here, surrounded by grass and trees, it’s amazing how quickly I can just excommunicate the stress. Can I say that? Excommunicate? Why not?

OK. What have we learned today? Three lessons, so please take note.

Number one, don’t let your space get too crowded.

Number two, don’t let your schedule get too crowded.

Number three, and this is the most important of all, don’t ever, ever let a hippopotamus sit on your lap.

USB: The Clear Winner

December 25th, 2008

The technology world is no stranger to format wars
Since the showdown between Betamax and VHS to the current struggle between HD-DVD and Blu-Ray, companies intent on owning technology standards are willing to spend big bucks persuading other companies to join their respective camps. Some companies do this for the royalties while others do it to increase the availability and distribution of their intellectual property.

A much quieter format war has been waged on the PC over the past ten years
The Universal Serial Bus standard, more popularly known as USB, was distributed with the Windows operating system in late 1996. The standard was jointly created by Compaq, IBM, DEC, Intel, Microsoft, NEC, and Northern Telecom and is now available on 90% of all computers manufactured today.

FireWire owned the high-speed market from the beginning
In 1995, the same year that the USB standard was being formalized, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) approved the IEEE-1394 standard, also known as FireWire or i.link, which had been developed by Apple. The fast speeds promised by FireWire (100 Mbps, 200 Mbps, 400 Mbps) was overkill for most peripherals not requiring a massive amount of bandwidth, such as mice and keyboards. Sony quickly embraced the technology (referring to it as i.link) and, along with a host of other manufacturers, integrated it into bandwidth-hungry peripherals such as digital cameras, digital camcorders, optical drives, scanners, web cams, etc.

USB and FireWire lived together happily in the beginning
In the early days these formats were not mutually-exclusive - there was very little overlap between the technologies and hence little competition. FireWire owned the high-bandwidth market while USB owned the low-bandwidth. At a max speed of 12 Mbps USB could not begin to compete with the 400 Mbps standard that evolved from FireWire for data transfer.

USB 2.0 is introduced
The end of the year 2001 marked a drastic change in the competitive landscape for these two standards: USB 2.0 was released. USB 2.0 offered the ease of use of (renamed) USB 1.1 and, at 480 Mbps, comparable speeds to FireWire. Note that while the theoretical limit of USB 2.0 is 80 Mbps faster than FireWire, empirically FireWire seems to be more efficient and thus has a higher effective transfer rate.

FireWire lost its competitive advantage
To simplify the process of purchasing peripherals and devices, manufacturers have identified no clear advantage of including FireWire ports on many new laptops and desktops and it is becoming increasingly more common to find new computers with only USB 2.0 ports. Even the digital video industry, which has long favored FireWire as the interface of choice, has begun to accept USB 2.0 as an alternative to FireWire because of the universal availability of USB ports.

Who will win the next battle?
So while there may be slight performance gains by using FireWire, many people are abandoning the technology in favor of the more popular USB standard. To compete for high-end, data intensive applications, FireWire 800, with a maximum speed of 800 Mbps, is helping FireWire maintain its position as the interface of choice for bandwidth-hungry devices - it will be interesting to see how the release of a faster USB technology will be received by the consumer market.

Preston Wily is the Director of Marketing for Sewell Direct, a retailer of USB adapters and accessories. Sewell is currently securing relationships with manufacturers of Wireless USB hubs and devices to prepare for the inevitable wireless revolution.

Building a folding screen

December 24th, 2008

Folding screens can add elegance and style to any décor. So just how to you build a folding screen? It really is relatively simple!

Well I found building a folding screen fairly easy and I’m certainly no handyman.

Firstly, to build a folding screen you need three interior shutters or panelled doors. Typically these will be light and not too wide. If you buy ones too heavy you’ll find it hard to move the folding screen around the house. You will also need six hinges - make sure they match your décor! And a toolkit, of course.

To build a folding screen you next need to glue or nail 1/2-inch or 3/4-inch rope molding around the front borders of each panel. Once you’ve done that stain or paint the doors in your desired shade or colour. You can even do different colors or patterns on each side if you like! Gild the molding for a fancy look.

Allow the doors to completely dry. The next step in building a folding screen is to attach the hinges. Measure one quarter, one half and three quarters of the height of each door and mark the edge. You then need to attach the hinges at these marks. The first set of three should be installed on the front side and the second set should go on the back. This allows you to fold the screen up to the size of one panel.

And viola! You now know how to build a folding screen! Time to get building!

Legal note: I’m not a handyman and if you follow my intructions and build a folding screen you are doing so at your own risk. This is meant for entertainment only and you really need to consult a qualified joiner or handyman for your folding screen advice.

Wonderful Online Shopping Coupons

December 24th, 2008

If you’re like most people you would love to forego all of the holiday crowds and be able to shop for gifts without all the hassle. You can if you turn on your computer and do a few online searches. Almost every gift imaginable can be found on the Internet and with all of the online shopping coupons that are available you can find some very sweet deals.

One of the most challenging parts of doing any gift shopping is finding something unique and original. Many people seem to have everything and you may feel as though you’ve already exhausted each and every idea. If this is the case and you know they are web savvy consider giving them a selection of online gift certificates. That way they can choose exactly what they want.

Buying for close friends and family members is generally easier. You already know what they like and with online shopping coupons you can find those things and hopefully save some money. There are coupons available for everything from books to clothing. Tons of sites sell toys and for the little people on your list you can use online shopping coupons to get them the things they want at a discounted price.

It can take a bit of searching to find these types of deals. Your first stop should be one of the websites that just feature coupons. Many of them have hundreds of different coupons all offering deals on different items. Online shopping coupons generally consist of a special alpha or numeric code that you enter upon check-out.

When looking for something in particular such as a deal on airfare or a hotel consider doing a search based solely on that. You’ll generate some good results and then it’s just a matter of checking which coupons will save you the most money. There are also many message boards devoted to saving money online and people posting may have some valuable information regarding where to find the best deals.

Don’t neglect any special offers that offer free shipping and handling. If you are ordering several items these charges can quickly add up and with online shopping coupons that feature free shipping and handling you are saving a nice chunk of change.

Most online retailers recognize the importance of return business and will send special email deals to their customers. Quite often they’ll include online shopping coupons as an incentive for their customers to purchase again. Take advantage of these deals when possible and you’ll enjoy some substantial savings.

Video iPod Seeing Success

December 23rd, 2008

According to various industry sources, it appears as if the new iPods are selling incredibly well. Indeed, many skeptics doubted whether the Apple’s new iPod video would be an instant success due to a lack of significant content and the fact that the video isn’t as high of quality as it probably could be. However, despite these potential drawbacks, early reports indicate that Apple is going to be seeing more profits than ever now that the new video iPod has hit the shelves.

The 5th Generation Apple iPod is definitely pushing technological boundaries by combining video capabilities into the mp3 world. Future success was undoubted, but such quick success was indeed looked upon as being not as likely. However, analysts report positively for Apple. “In our recent proprietary checks with industry and channel sources, we believe sales of 5G iPods are coming in ahead of expectations,” American Technology Research analyst Shaw Wu said in a research note. “In some cases, in Apple’s own channels, including its physical stores and online store, we believe 5G iPods are surprisingly outselling even the very popular iPod nano.”

Businessweek has also pointed out that in most cases there is a 5-7 day delay in fulfilling the orders of the 5th Generation Apple iPod due to a constraint in supplies. Apparently, Apple is looking for a second supplier of LCD screens to relieve this constraint and get more iPods onto store shelves.
